About “Into the Woods”

On April 20th, 21st & 22nd, BHS Drama Society will present a Student, Faculty, & Alumni production of Stephen Sondheim’s classic musical, “Into the Woods”.

Whether or not you are familiar with the musical, everyone knows the familiar fairy tale characters that make up the cast. The story of Cinderella and Prince Charming, complete with her wicked step-mother and step-sisters, meets the tales of Jack & the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood (and the wolf!), and Rapunzel. A ‘childless Baker’ and his Wife set out on a quest into the woods to attempt to reverse a curse on their family in order to have a child. The pair must find the following ingredients:

A cow as white as milk

A slipper as pure as gold

A cape as red as blood

Hair as yellow as corn

The curse was placed by the Witch, who promises to reverse the curse when all four ingredients are found.

A fast-paced and suspenseful adventure deep within the woods takes many twists and turns as the characters attempt to get what they wish for and find their ‘Happily Ever After’- including the consequences of these wishes, that traditional fairy tales conveniently ignore. In Act Two, all of the characters must deal with what happens AFTER “Happily Ever After.” As they face a genuine threat to their community, they realized that all actions have consequences, and their lives are inescapably interdependent, but also that interdependence is their greatest strength.
